What is the GPX format?

GPX is a short form given to GPS exchange. As the name suggests, GPX is a file format that allows you to exchange GPS coordinates with anyone by sharing them as a file. Moreover, you can also import GPX files into a GPS application.

GPX is a systemized/organized list of specific locations that form a route for hikers, cyclists, or anyone who requires tracking particular routes. The routes can also be printed on paper or displayed through an interactive map.

You can also take GPX as a file format similar to mp3. For instance, when you open an mp3 song, in the file’s data, mp3 encodes every music note in a certain way, and then your computer transforms this file’s data into a sound for you to enjoy it. Just like mp3, a GPX file also includes map data and coordinates. Google Maps also transforms GPX file data on a map to obtain/ draw a travel route.

Opening a GPX file in Google Maps can be difficult for a person who is new to this format.

Note: All GPS applications don’t support GPX file format. However, it is possible to open a GPX file using Google Maps.
